Monster Hunter Wilds developers unveil a thrilling new environment and formidable foe in an exclusive interview. Discover the Oilwell Basin and its fearsome ruler, the Nu Udra.
Exploring the Oilwell Basin
IGN's exclusive chat with directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka introduces the Oilwell Basin, a unique vertical locale unlike the series' typical horizontal landscapes. Fujioka explains the basin's layered structure: "The deeper you delve, the hotter and more magma-filled it becomes," with upper levels featuring oil-slick swamps transitioning to a volcanic core.
Tokuda adds that the "Plenty" event dramatically alters the basin's appearance, transforming the lower levels into an underwater volcanic ecosystem, reminiscent of Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. "During Fallow and Inclemency, it's volcanic; during Plenty, it's a vibrant marine environment. The unique creatures reflect this change."
This unique ecosystem boasts a diverse range of creatures, defying its seemingly barren exterior.
Nu Udra: The Black Flame
The Oilwell Basin's apex predator, the Nu Udra, a massive, fiery octopus-like monster, utilizes its flammable, slimy body and tentacles to ensnare and incinerate prey. This fire-wielding beast complements the Windward Plains' lightning-based Rey Dau and the Scarlet Forest's water-powered Uth Duna.
Fujioka explains the design inspiration: "I always wanted a tentacled monster. We took an aquatic creature and gave it a demonic, striking look," incorporating horn-like features. The accompanying battle music enhances this demonic aesthetic with "phrases and instruments reminiscent of black magic," according to Tokuda.
Battles are intensely challenging due to its rapid-fire attacks, both focused and area-of-effect, and immunity to Flash Bombs.
Additional Basin Inhabitants
Beyond the Nu Udra, the Oilwell Basin houses other formidable creatures. The Ajarakan, a fiery, monkey-like beast, utilizes martial arts-inspired moves and devastating fire-enhanced punches. The Rompopolo, a globular monster with needle-like mouthparts, employs toxic gases in combat; its design was inspired by mad scientists, resulting in surprisingly "cute" equipment drops.
A returning monster, Gravio from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, also inhabits the Oilwell Basin, fitting its volcanic environment and providing a fresh challenge.
With these exciting reveals, anticipation builds for Monster Hunter Wilds' February 28th launch.
