Netflix Achieves Record Subscriber Growth, Announces Price Increases
Netflix concluded 2024 with a record-breaking fourth quarter, surpassing 300 million paid subscribers for the first time. The company added a staggering 19 million subscribers in Q4 alone, culminating in a total yearly increase of 41 million. While this marks the last quarter Netflix will formally report subscriber growth figures, they will continue announcing membership milestones.
This exceptional growth coincides with another price increase across most plans in the US, Canada, Portugal, and Argentina. This marks the latest in a series of price adjustments, following increases in 2023 and 2022, and reflecting a consistent, albeit moderate, annual price rise since 2014.
In their shareholder letter, Netflix justified the price hike by citing ongoing investments in programming and a commitment to enhancing member value. The letter stated that periodic price adjustments are necessary to reinvest in improving the service. The October 2024 guidance already anticipated the price changes in Argentina.
While the exact price increases weren't explicitly detailed in the letter, reports from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg suggest the following adjustments:
- Basic with Ads: $6.99 to $7.99 per month
- Standard (ad-free): $15.49 to $17.99 per month
- Premium: $22.99 to $24.99 per month
A significant addition is a new "extra member with ads" plan, allowing users of the ad-supported tier to add an extra household member for a fee. Previously, this feature was only available to standard and premium subscribers.
Netflix's Q4 revenue saw a 16% year-over-year increase, reaching $10.2 billion, mirroring the annual revenue growth to $39 billion. The company projects a 12% to 14% year-over-year revenue growth for 2025.
