The highly anticipated trailer for Rust, the upcoming movie featuring Alec Baldwin, has finally been released. This production experienced a devastating incident during filming when a prop firearm used by Baldwin tragically resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on May 2, 2025, and you can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott) accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In an unexpected turn of events, his estranged grandfather, infamous outlaw Harland Rust (Alec Baldwin), rescues him from jail and they embark on a perilous journey toward Mexico.
“As they evade capture by relentless U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and ruthless bounty hunter ‘Preacher’ (Travis Fimmel), the duo faces the unforgiving challenges of the frontier.”
It’s important to note that cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life on October 22, 2021, after being struck by a live round fired from a prop gun wielded by Alec Baldwin. Director Joel Souza, who was also present, recounted that Baldwin was demonstrating how to draw the gun from its holster when the fatal discharge occurred. The firearm involved was meant to be a "cold gun" devoid of ammunition, yet it clearly contained live rounds.Following the tragedy, charges against Baldwin were dismissed in April 2023, while Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, responsible for preparing the firearm for the scene, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. First assistant director David Halls, tasked with verifying the firearm's contents, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of probation.
According to Variety, Rust made its debut at Poland’s Camerimage Film Festival in November 2024, paying tribute to Halyna Hutchins in the credits. Baldwin did not attend the event, though Joel Souza was present and honored her memory, stating, “We are here in a place she loved so much, probably second only to being on set.” He expressed gratitude for those who gathered to celebrate Hutchins’ artistry and legacy.
