Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link Mobile Game Cancelled After Years of Development
Square Enix has officially pulled the plug on Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, ending development of the long-in-production mobile title. While surprising to some fans, this marks yet another cancelled project from the publisher following recent high-profile cancellations.
The development team had been working on the game since 2019, conducting multiple closed beta tests across Android and iOS platforms. A November 2024 announcement about development delays gave players hope, making today's cancellation especially disappointing for beta participants.
What Led to the Cancellation?
Studio representatives explained that after extensive development, they couldn't deliver a live-service experience that would meet long-term player expectations. The game's ambitious GPS-based concept – allowing players to battle Heartless worldwide during a previously unexplored Kingdom Hearts era – ultimately proved too challenging to execute effectively.
Good News for Kingdom Hearts Fans
Square Enix is now concentrating resources on Kingdom Hearts IV, originally announced during the franchise's 20th anniversary celebration in 2022. Fans disappointed by Missing-Link's cancellation can take comfort in knowing the core series continues development.
