When you begin a new character in Stardew Valley, you're given the chance to adopt a single cat or dog to live on your farm. However, with the 1.6 update released in early 2024, the game now allows for multiple pets. To unlock this feature, you must first maximize your friendship level with your current pet.
To do this, ensure you fill your pet's water bowl daily using your Watering Can—except on rainy or snowy days when the bowl fills automatically. Additionally, pet your animal once a day; you'll know you've done it right when a heart bubble appears over their head. You can track your pet's friendship progress in the "Animals" tab within the pause menu.
Once the friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notification from Marnie via mail, offering you the chance to adopt more pets from her shop, located south of your farm. If you've managed to avoid adopting a pet in your first year, Marnie will send the notice at the start of Year 2.

After choosing your new pets, visit Robin’s carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to craft Pet Bowls for each. These bowls serve as a water source and a "home" for your pets, ensuring their friendship meter remains intact. Neglecting these bowls could result in your pets running away, which would be a costly loss.
Pet Bowls are available under Robin’s "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, costing 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood each, obtainable with a Copper Axe or better. Consider crafting these before adopting your pets to maintain their friendship levels.

For additional decorative items, you can purchase Doghouses and Cat Trees at Marnie’s Ranch. These items enhance your farm's aesthetic but do not affect your pets' friendship levels.
