DCU's Second Chapter Unveiled: Gunn Previews Epic Film

Author : Claire Feb 25,2025

James Gunn recently updated reporters on the DC Universe's status at a DC Studios presentation. Among other announcements, Gunn revealed he's already writing the script for his next DCU directorial effort, following Superman. He's certainly busy!

While Gunn remained tight-lipped about his next project – likely until after Superman's July release – we've considered potential candidates. Which franchises and characters best align with Gunn's distinctive style? Which films should be prioritized as Gunn and Peter Safran build their new shared universe? Here are our top choices:

Upcoming DC Movies and TV Shows

Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Despite Batman's cinematic ubiquity, Batman: The Brave and the Bold generates significant buzz. This reboot introduces the DCU's Caped Crusader, focusing on the Bat-family, including Bruce Wayne's son, Damian. However, the film's progress seems slow, with director Andy Muschietti's involvement uncertain. Introducing a second cinematic Batman alongside Robert Pattinson's presents a challenge.

The DCU needs a strong Batman. If Muschietti departs, Gunn stepping in could ensure the project's success (a possibility already being discussed). Gunn's expertise in emotional father-son dynamics (seen in Guardians of the Galaxy) makes him an ideal choice for the Bruce/Damian narrative.

The Flash

The Flash is crucial to any DCU. However, his live-action history is turbulent. While The CW series showcased a successful ensemble, Ezra Miller's DCEU portrayal faltered, resulting in a box-office failure.

The Flash needs a fresh approach, avoiding overused storylines like Flashpoint. The film should center Barry Allen (and/or Wally West), not Batman. Gunn's knack for dynamic action and character connection would benefit a Flash film immensely.

The Authority

Gunn acknowledged the challenges of adapting The Authority, citing the need to differentiate it from The Boys and similar projects. He mentioned it's currently on the back burner.

The Authority is vital to the expanding DCU. Its inclusion in early announcements and María Gabriela de Faría's Engineer appearing in Superman suggests its importance. The contrast between the optimism of heroes like Superman and The Authority's cynicism is key.

Gunn's talent for working with unconventional heroes and crafting engaging dialogue makes him a suitable director.

Amanda Waller/ARGUS Movie

Gunn mentioned setbacks for the planned Waller series. With his commitments to Superman, Peacemaker Season 2, and Creature Commandos, a film adaptation might be more feasible.

Waller and ARGUS are the DCU's connective tissue. Their presence in Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker Season 2 emphasizes their importance. Focusing on this element of the universe, potentially as a film, is logical.

Batman & Superman: World's Finest

Batman v Superman fell short of expectations, largely due to its dark tone. A film showcasing their friendship and collaboration would be a welcome change. Gunn could excel at this type of crossover. A Gunn-directed Batman/Superman film would be a significant boost to the DCU.

Titans

The Teen Titans boast a large fanbase and rich history. While Titans (the Max series) had flaws, it proved their live-action viability. Their dysfunctional family dynamic is appealing. Gunn's success with the Guardians suggests he could effectively portray the Titans' unique dynamic.

Justice League Dark

The DCU's focus on the supernatural (Swamp Thing, Creature Commandos) suggests Justice League Dark is a natural progression. This film would feature magical heroes like Zatanna, Etrigan, and Constantine, offering a contrast to the traditional Justice League. The team's inherent dysfunction aligns perfectly with Gunn's style.
