Variety reports Guy Ritchie will direct the sequel to Amazon MGM's 2024 Road House remake, with Jake Gyllenhaal reprising his role as ex-UFC fighter-turned-bouncer Elwood Dalton.
Amazon confirmed plans for a Gyllenhaal-led sequel in May 2024, shortly after the remake's successful March premiere. The film drew over 50 million views in its first two weekends on Prime Video, becoming Amazon MGM Studios' most-watched original film debut at the time.
While Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) directed the 2024 remake, he publicly opposed the streaming release and won't return for the sequel.
"We made this film for theatrical release - that's how everyone was compensated," Liman stated. "When Amazon changed the distribution plan, nobody saw additional revenue despite 50 million viewers - not me, not Jake, not [producer] Joel Silver. That simply isn't right."
Gyllenhaal maintains Amazon had always planned streaming distribution.
This marks Ritchie and Gyllenhaal's third collaboration following The Covenant (2023) and the upcoming thriller In the Grey with Henry Cavill. Screenwriter Will Beall (Bad Boys: Ride or Die) is handling the script.
Ritchie remains prolific - he recently directed episodes of Paramount+'s MobLand starring Tom Hardy, while his next feature Fountain of Youth premieres this month on Apple TV+.
