IDW has been incredibly ambitious with its approach to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) franchise, launching several new series in quick succession. In 2024, they relaunched the flagship TMNT comic with writer Jason Aaron, introduced a sequel to the best-selling TMNT: The Last Ronin, and initiated a crossover with Naruto titled TMNT x Naruto. Moving into 2025, the main TMNT series has welcomed a new regular artist and introduced a fresh status quo, with the four Turtles reuniting in New York City, though their relationship is far from harmonious.
As part of IGN Fan Fest 2025, we had the opportunity to discuss the future of these series with Jason Aaron and Caleb Goellner, the writer of TMNT x Naruto. We explored how these narratives evolve over time, the overarching mission for the TMNT line, and whether Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo can mend their fractured bonds.
The Mission Statement of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
IDW's recent flurry of TMNT releases includes the flagship monthly series, with the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 becoming a top-selling comic of 2024, moving around 300,000 copies. We asked Jason Aaron about the guiding vision for the TMNT line. He emphasized a return to the roots of the classic Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird TMNT comics from the Mirage days.
"For me, on this book, the guiding principle was just looking back at that original series, the original Mirage Studios book," Aaron shared with IGN. "Last year marked the 40th anniversary of that series, which introduced the Turtles. My first experience with these characters was through that black and white Mirage Studios book, before the films or cartoons. I wanted to recapture the grittiness, the griminess, and the dynamic action scenes of those early days."
Aaron further explained his approach, aiming to blend the classic feel with a new narrative that reflects the Turtles' growth and current challenges. "We're telling a story that feels new and moves these characters forward after their previous adventures. They've grown up and are at a turning point, trying to figure out how to reunite and reclaim their heroism to face the new threats."

TMNT #1's success last year, alongside other major comic reboots like Marvel’s Ultimate Universe line, DC’s Absolute line, and Skybound’s Energon Universe, suggests a strong audience demand for streamlined, accessible entries into major franchises. Aaron reflected on this trend, expressing his excitement about contributing to such a vibrant comic landscape.
"I'm thrilled to be part of this movement, even after 20 years in the industry and writing for various companies. When I got the call to work on Turtles, I was excited and knew I could do something special," Aaron said. "Collaborating with a talented array of artists over the first six issues was incredible. This book is for both long-time Turtles fans and newcomers alike."
A TMNT Family Reunion
Aaron's run began with the Turtles scattered across the globe, each in unique situations. By the end of the first storyline, they reunite in New York City, though tensions run high. "It was fun to explore each brother's individual journey, but the real excitement comes from seeing them interact once they're back together," Aaron noted. "They're not happy to see each other, and the city has changed, becoming a weapon against them. They must overcome their differences to face this new threat."
With issue #6, Juan Ferreyra joined as the new regular artist, bringing a consistent visual style to the series. "Juan's work is perfect for this story, capturing the essence of the Turtles navigating the gritty streets of Manhattan," Aaron praised.
Merging the TMNT and Naruto Universes
The TMNT x Naruto crossover, crafted by Caleb Goellner and artist Hendry Prasetya, introduces a world where the Turtles and the Uzumaki Clan coexist. Goellner credited Prasetya for the Turtles' redesign, fitting them seamlessly into the Naruto universe. "I had minimal input on the redesigns, but what Hendry came up with is incredible. I hope they become toys," Goellner said.
The crossover's charm lies in the character interactions, with Goellner enjoying the dynamics between Kakashi and the Turtles. "Kakashi, as a father figure, resonates with me. I love seeing him manage the group, and all the characters have their moments," he added. Goellner also teased an upcoming confrontation with a major TMNT villain, requested by Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto, promising exciting developments in the series.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 hit stores on February 26, while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto #3 is set for release on March 26. Additionally, IGN provided an exclusive preview of the final chapter of TMNT: The Last Ronin II - Re-Evolution.
