Microsoft is set to enhance the gaming experience on Xbox by integrating its AI-powered tool, Copilot, into the platform. This new feature, known as Copilot for Gaming, will soon be available for testing among Xbox Insiders via the Xbox mobile app. Copilot, which replaced Cortana in 2023 and is already integrated into Windows, will bring a range of functionalities to Xbox users. At launch, gamers can use Copilot to install games on their Xbox, inquire about their play history, check achievements, browse their game library, and get recommendations for what to play next. Additionally, users will be able to interact with Copilot directly through the Xbox app while playing, receiving responses in a manner similar to its current operation on Windows.
One of the key features highlighted by Microsoft is Copilot's role as a gaming assistant. Gamers can ask questions about gameplay, such as strategies to defeat bosses or solve puzzles, and Copilot will pull answers from Bing, sourcing information from online guides, websites, wikis, and forums. Microsoft aims to ensure the accuracy of the information provided by Copilot by collaborating with game studios, ensuring the AI reflects the studios' vision and directs players back to the original sources.
Looking ahead, Microsoft is exploring further integration of Copilot into video games. Potential future uses include serving as a walkthrough assistant to explain game mechanics, remembering item locations, and suggesting new ones. In competitive games, Copilot could provide real-time strategy tips to counter opponents and analyze gameplay outcomes. While these are currently conceptual, Microsoft is committed to integrating Copilot deeply into regular Xbox gameplay and plans to work with both first-party and third-party studios.
During the preview phase on mobile, Xbox Insiders will have the option to opt out and control their interaction with Copilot, including managing their conversation history and the actions Copilot performs on their behalf. Microsoft emphasizes transparency regarding data collection, usage, and user choices about sharing personal data. However, the possibility of Copilot becoming mandatory in the future remains open.
Beyond player-focused applications, Microsoft is set to discuss plans for developer use of Copilot at the upcoming Game Developers Conference, signaling a broader integration of AI into the gaming ecosystem.
