Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled its Overwatch 2 Stadium roadmap for 2025, providing a sneak peek into the exciting heroes and features slated for Season 17, Season 18, Season 19, and beyond.
In a detailed Director’s Take blog post, game director Aaron Keller shares insights into the new mode's past, present, and future. The post arrives alongside a surprising summer roadmap, now that the mode has been live for over a week. Keller also sheds light on the origins of Stadium and its impressive performance to date.
Stadium Welcomes 7 New Heroes This Summer -------------------------------------The Stadium mode will expand its roster with the introduction of Damage hero Freja in a mid-season patch for Season 16. However, it's Season 17 in June that promises a significant boost. Heroes like Junkrat, Sigma, and Zenyatta will join the fray, accompanied by the new Esperança Push map and Samoa Control map.
During Season 17, Blizzard plans to enrich the Stadium experience with features such as Unranked Crossplay, new all-star rewards, custom games, additional example builds, and the ability to save and share builds. The timing of these additions—whether they'll roll out at the season's start or throughout—remains to be seen.
Season 18 will introduce Overwatch's iconic gorilla, Winston, alongside Sojourn and Brigitte. The Route 66 and London maps will become available, and a new Payload Race game mode will launch with two additional maps. Stadium trials and the option to Endorse teammates will also be introduced.
Blizzard's commitment to Stadium's growth is evident, with plans to add "multiple new heroes" each season, including both existing Overwatch 2 characters and new ones yet to be revealed. Looking ahead to Season 19 and beyond, a new China map and a Draft Mode feature are on the horizon, along with consumables, item system tweaks, and more.

How Has Stadium Performed So Far?
The Overwatch 2 team has shared impressive performance statistics for Stadium. The mode has quickly become the most played in Overwatch 2, surpassing Quick Play and Competitive with 2.3 million matches played over 7.8 million hours in its launch week alone.
Stadium's launch week stats are more than double those of Overwatch Classic's launch. Notable data points include Lucio being the hero with the highest win rate and the lowest pick rate, and players spending a staggering 900 billion Stadium Cash on 206 million items for their builds.
In his Director’s Take, Keller clarifies that Stadium's development began before Overwatch 2's launch, dispelling fan theories that it was a response to Marvel Rivals, which debuted in December 2024.
AnswerSee ResultsKeller promises continued communication about Stadium, with another Director’s Take scheduled for next week. He reaffirms Blizzard's commitment to maintaining core experiences like Quick Play and Competitive, emphasizing that Stadium is not competing for resources but providing new avenues for exciting gameplay.
“Before signing off, I'd like to reiterate the team’s commitment to the Core modes of Overwatch," Keller stated. "We’re still pouring as much time, energy, and passion into these as we always have. Stadium isn't competing for those resources: it’s giving us more opportunities to deliver Overwatch in a new, exciting way.
"We can't wait for you to see what's coming there, especially Season 18. It's going to be a banger! Have fun with Stadium and, as always, let’s make a great game.”
Stadium was introduced with the launch of Season 16 last week, as part of Blizzard's efforts to re-energize its player base. This initiative began with a comprehensive Spotlight presentation in February, leading to the reintroduction of loot boxes and an improved Steam rating, which many players consider to be the best Overwatch experience in years.
