It appears Death Stranding is not only getting a live-action adaptation but an anime as well. Ahead of the June release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, director Hideo Kojima has hinted at an anime project based on the game in a new interview.
In a conversation with Vogue Japan, Kojima discussed his ongoing partnership with A24 for the live-action Death Stranding movie. He concluded by teasing work on an anime adaptation. Here is the translated excerpt:
"I am currently collaborating with A24 on a live-action film adaptation of 'DEATH STRANDING.' Recent game adaptations range from faithful narratives like 'The Last of Us' to fan-centric celebrations like 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie.' Each has its strengths, but as a cinephile, my goal is to explore cinematic expression. I aim to craft a 'DEATH STRANDING' film that stands on its own artistic merits—one worthy of recognition at festivals like Cannes and Venice. Additionally, we are actively developing an anime version."
While no specific studio was named, this strongly suggests an anime adaptation is in development.
In 2023, A24 officially announced its collaboration with Kojima Productions on the live-action film. Kojima emphasized that the movie would not be a direct copy of the game, stating, "Our vision is to appeal not just to gamers, but to all cinema lovers. We are building a new Death Stranding universe uniquely tailored for the film medium."
Earlier this year, reports indicated that Michael Sarnoski, director of A Quiet Place: Day One, joined the project to write and direct. Norman Reedus, the actor behind Sam Bridges, expressed interest in reprising his role if given the opportunity.
The prospect of an anime adaptation opens exciting creative possibilities. Depending on the animation studio involved, we could see diverse and imaginative interpretations of the Death Stranding world. Imagining a version by a studio like Trigger, for instance, is a thrilling thought.
