Bungie's Marathon: A Year of Silence, a Promise of Playtests
After a year of radio silence, Bungie's highly anticipated sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon, has resurfaced with a developer update. Initially unveiled at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game, a revival of Bungie's pre-Halo legacy, has generated considerable excitement. However, details have been sparse until now.
Game Director Joe Ziegler addressed community concerns, confirming the game's continued development and describing Marathon as Bungie's take on the extraction shooter genre. While gameplay footage remains elusive, Ziegler assured fans that the project is "on track," undergoing significant revisions based on extensive player testing. He hinted at a class-based system featuring customizable "Runners" with unique abilities, showcasing early concepts for "Thief" and "Stealth" Runners.
Expanded playtests are planned for 2025, offering a broader player base the chance to experience the game. Ziegler encouraged fans to wishlist Marathon on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation to demonstrate interest and facilitate communication regarding future updates.
A Fresh Take on a Classic
Marathon is a reimagining of Bungie's 1990s trilogy, marking a significant departure from the Destiny franchise. While not a direct sequel, it's set within the same universe and retains a distinctly Bungie feel. Players, as Runners, compete for alien artifacts and valuable loot on Tau Ceti IV, either solo or in teams of three. The game emphasizes PvP combat and player-driven narratives integrated within the overarching storyline.
The Road to Release
The development journey has not been without challenges. The departure of original project lead Chris Barrett in March 2024, following accusations of misconduct, and subsequent layoffs impacting approximately 17% of Bungie's workforce, undoubtedly impacted the development timeline. Despite these setbacks, Ziegler's update suggests a renewed focus and commitment to delivering a polished product.
Marathon is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with confirmed cross-play and cross-save functionality. While a release date remains unannounced, the promise of expanded playtests in 2025 offers a glimmer of hope for eager fans.
