Sega's Risk-Taking Approach Fuels RGG Studio's Ambitious Projects
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) credits Sega's willingness to embrace risk as the driving force behind its ability to juggle multiple large-scale projects simultaneously. This includes a brand-new IP and the ambitious reimagining of a classic franchise. Learn more about the studio's exciting future endeavors.
Sega Embraces Innovation Over Safety
RGG Studio, renowned for the Like a Dragon series, is currently developing several high-profile projects, including a completely original IP. Despite already having the next Like a Dragon title and a Virtua Fighter remake slated for 2025, the studio recently announced two additional projects. Studio head and director Masayoshi Yokoyama attributes this to Sega's proactive approach to risk-taking.
In early December, RGG unveiled trailers for two distinct projects within a single week. Project Century, a new IP set in 1915 Japan, debuted at The Game Awards 2025, followed by a trailer for a new Virtua Fighter project (separate from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. remaster) on Sega's official channel. The scale and ambition evident in these projects highlight Sega's confidence in RGG Studio's capabilities. This reflects a strong trust and a commitment to exploring uncharted territory.
A Culture of Innovation
"Sega embraces the possibility of failure; it doesn't solely focus on safe bets," Yokoyama explained to Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media. He suggests this risk-taking is inherent to Sega's DNA, citing the creation of Shenmue as an example. Born from Sega's desire for innovation after working on Virtua Fighter, the question "What if we made 'VF' into an RPG?" led to the birth of the action-adventure series.
Commitment to Quality
RGG Studio assures fans that the simultaneous development of these projects won't compromise quality, particularly for the Virtua Fighter series. Original Virtua Fighter creator Yu Suzuki has expressed his support, and Yokoyama, along with Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada, emphasize their commitment to delivering a high-quality product.
Yamada added, "With this new 'VF,' we aim to create something innovative and exciting for a broad audience! Whether you're a series veteran or not, we hope you'll stay tuned for updates!" Yokoyama echoed this sentiment, expressing his anticipation for both titles.
