Splitgate 2: The Highly Anticipated Sequel Arrives in 2025
1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter Splitgate, have announced a sequel launching in 2025. This new installment promises a fresh take on the fast-paced, portal-powered arena combat that captivated millions.
A Familiar Experience, Reimagined
Revealed with a cinematic trailer on July 18th, Splitgate 2 is built on Unreal Engine 5 and will remain free-to-play. While retaining core elements of the original, the developers aim for a completely revitalized experience. CEO Ian Proulx stated their goal is to create a game with lasting appeal, exceeding a decade of play. This ambition led to a re-evaluation of portal mechanics, striving for a deeper, more rewarding gameplay loop that caters to both casual and expert players. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, emphasized a reimagining of portals to ensure skillful portal usage is rewarding without being mandatory for success.
The game will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. A key new feature is a faction system, adding strategic depth without transforming the game into a hero shooter.
New Factions, Maps, and More
The trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and introduced three distinct factions: Aeros (focused on speed), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). While specifics remain under wraps, these factions promise diverse playstyles.
A glimpse of gameplay will be shown at Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25). The developers assure fans the trailer accurately reflects the visual quality, maps, weapons, and even the return of dual-wielding—a fan-favorite feature.
No Single-Player Campaign, But Rich Lore
Splitgate 2 will not include a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will offer comics, character cards, and even a quiz to help players determine which faction best suits their playstyle, providing a deeper dive into the game's narrative. The original Splitgate's unexpected success, fueled by a demo that garnered 600,000 downloads in a month, paved the way for this ambitious sequel. The developers halted updates on the original to focus on creating a truly revolutionary successor.
