Starfield 2: A Hell of a Game Years in the Making?
Though Starfield only launched in 2023, whispers of a sequel are already circulating. While Bethesda remains tight-lipped, a former developer has offered some intriguing insights. Let's explore what we might expect from a potential Starfield 2.
Ex-Bethesda Designer Hints at a Stellar Sequel
Bruce Nesmith, a former lead designer at Bethesda with a hand in Skyrim and Oblivion, boldly predicted that Starfield 2, should it materialize, will be "one hell of a game." Nesmith, who departed Bethesda in September 2021, believes the foundational work of the original Starfield provides a solid springboard for an even better sequel, learning from both successes and shortcomings. Drawing parallels to the evolution of the Skyrim and Oblivion series, he anticipates Starfield 2 will build upon its predecessor, addressing player feedback and refining existing mechanics.
Nesmith highlighted the iterative nature of game development, citing examples like Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed, franchises that truly blossomed with subsequent installments. He suggests Starfield 2 will leverage the initial game's groundwork, adding new content and resolving existing issues to create a more enriched experience.
"I’m looking forward to Starfield 2," Nesmith stated. "It will be able to take what’s in there right now and put in a lot of new stuff and fix a lot of those problems."
A Long Wait Ahead: Years, Perhaps Even a Decade
Starfield's reception was mixed, with some criticism directed at pacing and content. However, Bethesda's commitment to Starfield as a flagship franchise alongside Elder Scrolls and Fallout is clear. Director Todd Howard confirmed plans for annual story expansions, aiming for long-term support. He emphasized Bethesda's dedication to quality over speed, prioritizing the creation of "meaningful moments" for fans.
Bethesda's history of lengthy development cycles is well-documented. The Elder Scrolls VI, in pre-production since 2018, remains in early development. Fallout 5 is slated to follow Elder Scrolls VI. Considering Phil Spencer's 2023 statement that Elder Scrolls VI is "at least five years out," a Starfield 2 release before the mid-2030s seems unlikely.
While Starfield 2 remains speculative, Bethesda's commitment to the franchise is evident through the recent release of the Shattered Space DLC, addressing some initial concerns. Further DLC is planned, offering fans something to look forward to while they patiently await the possibility of a future Starfield adventure.
