Deadlock Dev Uses ChatGPT to Help With Matchmaking Code

Valve's upcoming MOBA-hero shooter, Deadlock, recently overhauled its matchmaking system, leveraging the power of ChatGPT. A Valve engineer, Fletcher Dunn, publicly detailed how the AI chatbot helped discover the optimal algorithm for the game.

Deadlock's Matchmaking Overhaul: A ChatGPT Success Story

Deadlock's previous matchmaking, based on Matchmaking Rating (MMR), drew significant criticism from players. Reddit threads highlighted complaints about uneven skill distribution in matches, with consistently higher-skilled opponents paired against less experienced teammates. One player commented, "I get harder games with better enemies, but never equally skilled teammates," echoing widespread frustration.

Following player feedback, the Deadlock team acknowledged the flaws in their MMR system and promised a complete rewrite. Dunn's Twitter posts revealed that ChatGPT played a pivotal role in finding a solution. He used the AI to identify the Hungarian algorithm, a suitable choice for a matchmaking system where only one side (e.g., a player's preferences) needs to be considered.

Dunn's reliance on ChatGPT is evident in his tweets, highlighting the AI's increasing utility in his workflow. He even maintains a dedicated browser tab for ChatGPT, emphasizing its significant impact on his development process. While acknowledging the potential displacement of human interaction, he remains enthusiastic about the AI's capabilities.

The use of algorithms in matchmaking is common in online gaming. They analyze player data to create balanced and fair matches. In Deadlock's case, the Hungarian algorithm, as suggested by ChatGPT, likely focuses on optimizing team compositions based on individual player preferences or skill levels.

Despite the improvements, some players remain unconvinced, expressing continued dissatisfaction with the matchmaking system. Negative reactions to Dunn's tweets underscore the ongoing debate surrounding AI's role in game development and the potential impact on player experience.

Here at Game8, however, we remain optimistic about Deadlock's potential. For a more in-depth look at our impressions and playtest experience, check out the link below!
