The official game reveal event for The Blood of Dawnwalker took place on January 16th, unveiling further information about this narrative-driven open-world dark fantasy action RPG.
Players will assume the role of Coen, the Dawnwalker protagonist, who exists between day and night in the fictional 14th-century medieval European realm of Vale Sangora. Narrative director Jakub Szamalek describes Coen as an atypical video game hero, stating, "He's a young man who is emotional at his core, capable of vulnerability, and honest about his feelings." The trailer introduces the antagonist, Brencis, an ancient vampire who has usurped control of Vale Sangora. In this dark world where human civilization is deteriorating, Coen must save his family within the strict limit of 30 days and 30 nights. However, the developers clarify that the game's passage of time operates differently, allowing players to invest many hours into the experience.
The reveal trailer showcases Coen's superhuman abilities stemming from his vampiric nature, such as scaling down massive structures unscathed and phasing between enemies. He is also seen wielding magic and casting spells on command. With the game still in early development, many fan questions remain unanswered.
Rebel Wolves addressed several inquiries on their Discord server. Following the reveal event, an FAQ channel was created to answer the growing community's most common questions.
Firstly, what exactly are Dawnwalkers? They appear human by day but transform into vampires under the cover of night. Rebel Wolves clarifies they are not mere half-human, half-vampire hybrids but a distinct entity in between. Consequently, despite the fantasy setting, magic will not be overtly flashy. As noted in the FAQ, "Our magic is subtler than in pure fantasy settings and quite rare. It focuses on the occult—rituals, amulets, relics, and summonings—rather than fireballs or lightning bolts."
A Narrative Sandbox Experience With Numerous Characters
Coen is a Dawnwalker afflicted by silver poisoning, determined to rescue his family from impending doom. Despite this central quest, the developers describe the game as a "narrative sandbox," prioritizing player agency and freedom. The experience is designed to be "nonlinear with maximum emphasis on the player's agency and freedom to explore storylines, featuring one clear goal but many, many ways to achieve it." The world will dynamically change based on player decisions.
To preserve this dedicated single-player experience, the game will not include multiplayer or co-op modes. However, players can engage in romantic relationships with certain characters, ensuring Coen does not journey alone. He will encounter individuals from various races, such as the uriashi, kobolds, and potentially even werewolves.
Rebel Wolves is a studio founded by former CD Projekt Red developers known for their work on The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. The Blood of Dawnwalker does not have a confirmed release window yet but is confirmed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
