Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nears Completion, but Release Remains Distant
Toby Fox, creator of Undertale, recently shared a development update for Deltarune in his newsletter. While Chapter 4 is nearing completion, a release date for Chapters 3 and 4 (slated for simultaneous release on PC, Switch, and PS4) is still some time away.
Chapter 4 Progress:
All maps are finished, and battles are playable. However, the team is currently focused on polishing the chapter. This includes minor cutscene improvements, battle balancing and visual enhancements, background additions, and refining ending sequences for several battles. Despite this, Fox considers Chapter 4 largely playable, receiving positive feedback from testers.
Challenges and Next Steps:
The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges, especially since this is the first major paid release since Undertale. Fox highlights several key tasks before launch:
- Testing new features
- Finalizing PC and console versions
- Japanese localization
- Comprehensive bug testing
Beyond Chapter 4:
Chapter 3 development is complete. Interestingly, some team members have already begun preliminary work on Chapter 5, designing maps and bullet patterns.
The newsletter included teasers: a snippet of Ralsei and Rouxls' dialogue, Elnina's character description, and a new item, GingerGuard. While the extended wait is understandable given the scope (Chapters 3 and 4 combined will be longer than Chapters 1 and 2), Fox anticipates a smoother release schedule for future chapters once Chapters 3 and 4 are released. No specific release date was given.
