GeoGuessr Steam Edition, launched on May 8, has quickly become the second-worst rated game on Steam. This new version of the beloved browser game has disappointed many of its 85 million fans due to its monetization model and limited features compared to the original. The browser version of GeoGuessr is known for its extensive customization options, allowing players to tailor their gaming experience with various maps, settings, and community-made content.
Since its release, over 3,000 user reviews have been left for the Steam version, with 84% of them being negative. Players are particularly frustrated with the monetization system and the lack of gameplay options. The free-to-play aspect of the Steam version is limited to just one mode, Duels, in the Amateur Division, and offers less than an hour of free content. To access higher ranks and additional features, players must purchase a $30 one-off payment for a year-long subscription.

Further issues include the inability to unlink browser accounts from Steam accounts, the inability to log out of the Steam version, and the presence of bots in the free amateur mode. Even paid features from the browser version do not transfer to the Steam edition, unless one has an Elite Yearly subscription. GeoGuessr has clarified this in their FAQs, noting that the Steam Pass is a one-time purchase for a year of access, and the game is currently in early access to refine gameplay and introduce new features.

Despite the backlash, GeoGuessr remains committed to improving the Steam version. In a statement to IGN, the company expressed excitement about the Steam release, highlighting new possibilities such as connecting with Steam friends and enhanced anti-cheat functionality. The head of marketing, Tomas Jonson, emphasized that the game is in its early stages and that the team is dedicated to expanding and refining both the free and paid experiences based on community feedback.
GeoGuessr's reliance on Google Street View data, which incurs ongoing costs, has influenced the monetization model for the Steam edition. The company plans to keep the game in early access for at least six months, aiming to introduce new modes, maps, and competitive features. Jonson concluded by affirming the company's commitment to engaging with the community to further develop the Steam Edition.
