Horizon Actor Ashly Burch Says Sony's AI Aloy Video Left Her Feeling 'Worried About Game Performance as an Art Form'

Author : Aurora Mar 22,2025

Voice actress Ashly Burch, known for her portrayal of Aloy in the *Horizon* series, has addressed a leaked video showcasing AI-powered Aloy. The video, initially reported by The Verge, depicts an AI version of Aloy engaging in conversation with a Sony engineer. The AI's voice and facial animations are noticeably artificial, a stark contrast to Burch's performance in the games. While Sony has yet to comment, Guerrilla Games, the *Horizon* developer, contacted Burch to clarify that this was a tech demo, not reflective of current or future development, and did not utilize any of her performance data.

Burch, however, used this incident to highlight the concerns of striking voice actors. She expressed worry about the implications for the art form of voice acting, emphasizing the need for actor consent, fair compensation, and transparency regarding the use of AI in replicating their performances. She stressed that the issue isn't the technology itself, nor the desire of game companies to utilize it, but the lack of adequate protections for actors during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. She pointed out that temporary union contracts offering these protections are readily available for game companies to sign.

The use of generative AI in video games is a contentious issue, facing criticism for ethical and rights concerns, as well as its limitations in producing high-quality content. Keywords Studios' failed experiment in creating an AI-driven game underscores these challenges. Despite this, several companies, including Activision, have incorporated generative AI into their development processes, sparking further debate and backlash. The voice actor strike has already impacted several games, with reports of unvoiced NPCs and character recasting in titles like *Destiny 2*, *World of Warcraft*, *League of Legends*, and *Call of Duty: Black Ops 6*, and *Zenless Zone Zero*. PlayStation's Asad Qizilbash recently argued that AI's potential for personalization is crucial for younger generations.

Burch's statement serves as a call to action, emphasizing the need for industry-wide adoption of fair and protective practices regarding the use of AI in voice acting and performance capture.
