Hideo Kojima’s highly anticipated spiritual successor to *Metal Gear*, titled Physint, is still quite a ways off, according to the legendary game director himself. In a recent interview with Le Film Francais, Kojima revealed that the project is likely "another five or six years" away from completion. This timeline means fans will need to be patient as Kojima remains fully focused on delivering his first major "action espionage" title since his well-documented departure from Konami in 2015.
Kojima also mentioned that opportunities to direct a film have been put on hold until after Physint and other projects are completed. He stated, “I've had so many offers since I left Konami, with serious conditions to develop games in my independent studio.” Alongside the development of *Death Stranding 2*, Physint represents a major creative commitment for Kojima Productions. However, once those titles are complete, he hopes to finally pursue filmmaking—a passion rooted in his childhood. “I grew up with cinema,” he added. “Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!”
The PlayStation Studios announcement of *Physint* dates back to January 2024, but details surrounding the project remain limited. At the time of its reveal, Kojima hinted that *Physint* could blur the line between gaming and cinema. Later clarifications on X (formerly Twitter) emphasized that the experience would push boundaries in “Digital Entertainment,” incorporating cinematic elements such as story, visuals, casting, sound design, and fashion at an unprecedented level.
Beyond *Physint*, Kojima and his team are juggling multiple ambitious ventures. These include *Death Stranding 2: On The Beach*, set for release on June 26, and *OD*, a mysterious new IP developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios. *OD* features notable talents like Hunter Schafer and Jordan Peele, further raising expectations. Additionally, Kojima is creatively involved in A24’s upcoming film adaptation of the original *Death Stranding*. Actor Norman Reedus, who reprises his role as Sam Porter Bridges in *Death Stranding 2*, recently confirmed in an interview with IGN that he would love to play himself in the film version.
In a fascinating twist last week, Kojima shared some behind-the-scenes insights into his creative process, revealing previously discarded game concepts—including a unique idea for a ‘Forgetting Game’ where gameplay abilities fade over time if players take extended breaks. Even more intriguingly, he disclosed leaving a USB stick filled with unreleased game ideas for his staff to explore after his passing, ensuring that his creative vision continues beyond his lifetime.
