Mastering Duels in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

In *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*, despite the focus on battling hordes of faceless enemies, one of the standout features returning from earlier games is the duel system. Let's delve into how these duels work and what they mean for your gameplay experience.

What Are Duels in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Duels, a beloved feature from *Dynasty Warriors 4*, make a triumphant return in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* after more than two decades. You won't encounter duels right away; they become available in Chapter 2. However, not every enemy can be challenged to a duel. Only high-ranking and notable enemy officers are eligible for these one-on-one confrontations. When you spot such an officer, you can initiate a duel by pressing both the R1 and L1 buttons at the same time, but you must act quickly as the opportunity is fleeting.

Once a duel begins, a circle of soldiers forms around you, setting the stage for an intense one-on-one battle. This fight differs from regular combat as a duel meter appears at the top of the screen, representing both you and your opponent. Each successful hit you land on your opponent advances your side of the meter, while their hits push it towards them.

The objective is to fill the meter entirely by damaging your opponent enough. Notably, your health doesn't influence your starting position in the duel; instead, your overall morale plays a crucial role. If you're in the lead, your segment of the meter will be larger; if you're trailing, your opponent's will dominate. In a balanced fight, the meter will be evenly split. Given the one-on-one nature of duels, it's essential to read your opponent's moves carefully, dodge and parry effectively to minimize damage, and maintain a safe distance if they deploy a Battle Art. Remember, time is limited, but there's no need for recklessness.

Winning a duel in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* grants you the ability to inflict significant damage on your opponent and boosts your morale substantially. Conversely, losing a duel results in heavy damage to you and a morale drop for your army, which can be disastrous late in a battle. If neither side wins, both parties simply disengage, and the game continues without any penalties. However, some duels are inescapable; losing these results in mission failure, while winning them leads to an automatic victory. Thus, initiating a duel can be a game-changer, but underestimating your opponent could lead to your downfall.

And that's the essence of dueling in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*.

*Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
