Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart recently provided a positive update on the development of The Outer Worlds 2, assuring fans that progress is going smoothly, despite past hurdles. This update comes alongside news about their other projects, including the fantasy RPG Avowed.
Obsidian's Multi-Title Development Journey
In a YouTube interview with Limit Break Network, Urquhart highlighted the team's impressive work on The Outer Worlds 2. He praised the dedicated team, many of whom worked on the original title, expressing confidence in their ability to deliver a high-quality sequel.
However, Urquhart acknowledged significant challenges, particularly the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the studio's acquisition by Microsoft. Simultaneous development of multiple titles, including Grounded and Pentiment, strained resources. He candidly admitted a period of slowed development, even mentioning initial discussions about halting The Outer Worlds 2 to focus on Avowed. Ultimately, the studio persevered, continuing development across all projects.
Urquhart recounted the complexities of navigating acquisition, pandemic-related disruptions, and the simultaneous development of Outer Worlds, its DLC, Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, Grounded, and Pentiment.
Despite these challenges, Urquhart expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of Grounded and Pentiment, describing them as "awesome." He also shared positive assessments of Avowed ("looking great") and The Outer Worlds 2 ("looking incredible"). While specific details about game content remain scarce, the recent delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other projects.
Announced in 2021, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen limited updates. Urquhart acknowledged this and the possibility of a launch delay, similar to Avowed. However, he reaffirmed Obsidian's commitment to delivering high-quality games, stating that while original timelines may not be met, the studio is dedicated to completing all projects. Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
