Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be released as a physical Nintendo Switch game, featuring the full base game pre-installed on a 64GB cartridge—providing a tangible, complete game experience right out of the box.
In contrast, Switch 2 Game-Key Cards are physical items that contain only a download code for a chosen game. These cards do not store game data, meaning players must download the full title after inserting the card into their Switch 2 console. While each Game-Key Card case is clearly labeled on the front, this model has sparked concern among some gamers, particularly those who value physical ownership over digital licensing.
This news is especially reassuring for Sonic fans, as there had been confusion and conflicting reports about CrossWorlds in particular. Sega has now cleared up any uncertainty with a new FAQ, confirming that "the physical version will feature the full base game on a 64GB cartridge."
The FAQ also confirms that Nintendo Switch 2 players will enjoy crossplay support, seamless progression from the original Switch, and a $10 upgrade option for those who wish to transition to the Switch 2 version at a later date.
This stands in stark contrast to Square Enix’s recent announcement regarding its Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, which offers no upgrade path for Switch 2 and lacks cross-platform save compatibility—drawing criticism from fans.
Sega has also revealed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will boast an expansive roster of playable characters, especially when including DLC. Iconic staples like Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Knuckles, Shadow, and Tails are all present, and the lineup now expands to include crossover stars such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
With its wide array of characters and cross-platform availability, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is poised to challenge the upcoming Switch 2 exclusive Mario Kart World, which has so far maintained a strict policy of featuring only Nintendo-owned characters. As the classic Mario vs. Sonic rivalry revs up once again, fans can look forward to high-speed kart action when Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds launches on both the original Switch and Switch 2 this September.
IGN recently went hands-on with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and came away highly impressed. “It’s a vibe,” we said, “and one that I’ve enjoyed and will look forward to drifting through.”
