Silent Hill F Story Is a Supernatural and Psychological Horror Blend

Higurashi and When They Cry creator Ryukishi07 has shared insights into his work on Silent Hill f, comparing the game's blend of supernatural and psychological themes to "salad dressing."

While anticipation for Silent Hill f — the upcoming title reviving a franchise dormant since 2012 — is high, writer Ryukishi07 had remained relatively quiet until his recent appearance at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles.

During a panel with producer Motoi Okamoto and composer Akira Yamaoka, Ryukishi07 explained his unique approach to the project, focusing the narrative around a core thematic concept rather than his usual book-writing process.

As reported by Famitsu via Automaton, Ryukishi07 noted that players might initially find it hard to separate the game's supernatural and psychological horror elements, as they are intricately woven together. He suggested that as the story unfolds, these layers will gradually distinguish themselves, much like the oil and vinegar in a salad dressing eventually separate after being mixed.

He elaborated on this metaphor, describing how the two horror aspects will become distinct over time, similar to the ingredients in a dressing settling apart.

If this culinary comparison seems unexpected, you're not alone. Ryukishi07 also emphasized that, while players will uncover facts and clues about the town of Ebisugaoka, the game will leave ample room for personal interpretation and speculation — a hallmark of the Silent Hill community.

Furthermore, Ryukishi07 revealed that Silent Hill f's story extends beyond horror and torment. Like previous series entries, it delves into deeply human experiences, exploring themes of love, sorrow, and more.

Silent Hill f is not a direct sequel to any existing Silent Hill games. Publisher Konami has confirmed on X/Twitter that it is a standalone story, "independent from the series," designed to be accessible even to those new to the franchise.

Producer Motoi Okamoto highlighted the game's intense combat, the striking "juxtaposition between beauty and terror" in its visuals and music, and the uniquely disturbing monster designs. He added that the puzzles themselves are deeply rooted in psychological distress.

Set in 1960s Japan, Silent Hill f follows teenager Hinako Shimizu as she grapples with societal and personal pressures. As indicated in the Japanese reveal trailer, it is the first Silent Hill game to receive an 18+ rating in Japan. The game launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 25.
