SVC Chaos: A Surprise Revival on PC, Switch, and PS4
SNK's surprise announcement at EVO 2024 sent shockwaves through the fighting game community: SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos is back! Now available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4, this classic crossover fighter returns with modern enhancements. Xbox players, unfortunately, are left out of this revival.
Updated for Modern Gamers
The re-release features a revamped roster of 36 characters, a blend of SNK and Capcom icons. Expect to see familiar faces like Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury, the Mars People from Metal Slug, and Tessa from Red Earth, alongside Capcom stalwarts Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter.
The Steam page highlights key improvements: rollback netcode for smooth online play, multiple tournament modes (single elimination, double elimination, round-robin), a hitbox viewer, and a gallery showcasing 89 pieces of artwork.
A Nostalgic Return After Two Decades
SVC Chaos's return is monumental. Originally released in 2003, its absence for over two decades reflects SNK's past struggles, including bankruptcy and acquisition by Aruze. The company's difficulties transitioning from arcades to home consoles also contributed to the game's prolonged hiatus. Despite this, the dedicated fanbase kept the memory of SVC Chaos alive. This re-release celebrates that enduring legacy and introduces a new generation to its unique gameplay.
The Future of Capcom Crossovers
In a recent interview with Dexerto, Street Fighter 6 producer Shuhei Matsumoto hinted at Capcom's future plans for crossover fighting games. While a new Marvel vs. Capcom or a new Capcom/SNK collaboration is a possibility, Matsumoto stressed the significant time and effort required for such projects. The current focus, he explained, is reintroducing classic titles to a new audience on modern platforms.
Matsumoto also discussed the re-release of past Marvel titles, explaining the years of negotiations with Marvel and the role of community-driven tournaments like EVO in reigniting interest. The success of these re-releases lays the groundwork for potentially exciting future collaborations.
