Valve Delays "Deadlock" Updates for Optimization

Deadlock's Development Shifts to Larger, Less Frequent Updates in 2025

Valve has announced a change in its update strategy for Deadlock in 2025, shifting from frequent smaller patches to larger, less frequent updates. This decision, communicated via the official Deadlock Discord, follows a year of consistent updates in 2024. While this might disappoint some players expecting constant content, Valve assures that future updates will be more substantial and impactful, resembling major events rather than minor tweaks.

The shift is attributed to the challenges of maintaining a two-week update cycle. According to Valve developer Yoshi, this rapid pace hindered internal iteration and prevented sufficient time for external feedback to settle before the next update. This adjustment aims to streamline the development process and deliver more polished, comprehensive updates.

Deadlock's recent winter update, featuring unique gameplay alterations, offers a glimpse into this new approach. The update introduced changes suggesting a future focus on limited-time events and special modes, a common feature in live-service games. While a firm release date remains unconfirmed, Valve plans to provide further updates and details in 2025.

The free-to-play MOBA/hero shooter, initially released on Steam in early 2024, has already gained significant traction. Its distinctive steampunk aesthetic and polished gameplay have helped it stand out in a competitive market, even against popular titles like Marvel Rivals. Deadlock currently boasts 22 playable characters, further enhanced by eight additional heroes available in Hero Labs mode. Its innovative anti-cheat mechanisms also contribute to its appeal.

Key takeaways:

  • Reduced Update Frequency: Deadlock will receive fewer updates in 2025.
  • Larger Update Scope: Future updates will be more substantial and event-driven.
  • Continued Development: Limited-time events and special modes are expected to continue.
  • No Official Release Date: A release date for Deadlock remains unannounced.
