Stellar Blade Director Discusses Player Freedom and Future Content
Mods Enhance the Gaming Experience
Following the game's Steam release, Stellar Blade will continue supporting user modifications—including mature content—in the foreseeable future. Game director and ShiftUp CEO Hyung-tae Kim believes modding enriches gameplay and expands the game's creative possibilities. In a June 14 interview with South Korean outlet This Is Game, Kim expressed support for modding when used responsibly. He cautioned, "However, some modifications may constitute hacking or disrupt normal gameplay. Please exercise discretion."
Technical Director Dong-gi Lee noted that certain mods could cause technical issues, advising players to proceed with caution. He clarified, "Mods aren't subject to our quality assurance testing. While we support players using mods, we recommend reverting to the original game state if you encounter performance issues."
Regarding adult mods specifically, Kim stated he prefers not to limit creative expression. He emphasized that since Stellar Blade carries a mature rating, there's no justification for banning such content. The director wants players to engage with the game's creative ecosystem and encourages all owners to participate in modding culture.
"Players have the freedom to customize their experience after purchasing the game. I don't intend to restrict this aspect. However, as responsible adults, I trust players will exercise good judgment regarding socially sensitive content," Kim explained.
Concerning potential misuse of game assets, Kim asserted that responsibility lies with players after purchase. He advocates for true game ownership rather than the "rental" model becoming common in the industry.
He added, "Naturally, we would intervene in cases of public harm, though we haven't encountered such situations. I believe these matters are best resolved through community self-regulation rather than corporate policing."
Kim reiterated that post-purchase usage falls outside developer jurisdiction, confirming no plans for punitive measures against modders.
Planned DLC Evolves Into Full Sequel
During ShiftUp's May 16 investor presentation, the studio revealed a Stellar Blade sequel targeting release before 2027. Kim confirmed "Stellar Blade 2" is in development, though the team remains focused on the newly launched PC version.
He disclosed the sequel originated as DLC before expanding beyond initial scope. "A 2027 release would be ideal, but with only three years remaining, we'll do our best. I can promise it will be worth the wait," Kim stated.
The director acknowledged narrative shortcomings in the original game, attributing this to greater emphasis on gameplay mechanics. While cautious about immediate content additions, Kim pledged improved storytelling for the sequel.
Stellar Blade maintains strong momentum with its PC version, achieving over 192,078 concurrent players (per SteamDB) and "Very Positive" Steam reviews.
