Hideo Kojima Recounts Norman Reedus's Immediate Enthusiasm for Death Stranding
Celebrated game creator Hideo Kojima recently shared the surprisingly swift recruitment of Norman Reedus for his groundbreaking title, Death Stranding. Despite the game's nascent development stage, Reedus readily accepted Kojima's proposal.
Death Stranding, a unique post-apocalyptic adventure, unexpectedly captivated audiences. Central to its success was Reedus's portrayal of Sam Porter Bridges, a courier navigating perilous landscapes filled with hostile BT entities and MULES. His performance, alongside other Hollywood actors, contributed significantly to the game's enduring popularity and widespread acclaim.
With Death Stranding 2 underway, Kojima revealed the genesis of the original project. He recounted a casual pitch to Reedus at a sushi restaurant, resulting in an immediate affirmative response, even before a script existed. Remarkably, within a month, Reedus was engaged in motion capture for a promotional trailer. While Kojima didn't specify which trailer, it's plausible that footage was incorporated into the iconic E3 2016 teaser, unveiling Death Stranding as Kojima Productions' inaugural independent project.
Kojima's account also sheds light on his circumstances at the time. He describes pitching Death Stranding with limited resources, having recently established his independent studio following his departure from Konami. Interestingly, his prior collaboration with Guillermo del Toro on the canceled Silent Hills project, notably the infamous P.T. demo, facilitated his connection with Reedus, ultimately paving the way for their collaborative success on Death Stranding.
