Andy Muschietti, director of It and The Flash, has offered a much-needed update on the Shadow of the Colossus movie adaptation. Initially announced by Sony Pictures over a decade ago in 2009, with game creator Fumito Ueda on board, the project has had a lengthy development process. Josh Trank was initially attached to direct but ultimately departed due to scheduling conflicts, before Muschietti took the reins.
This adaptation is part of a recent wave of Sony game-to-film projects announced at CES 2025, including a Helldivers movie, a Horizon Zero Dawn film, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated feature.
In an interview on Radio TU’s La Baulera del Coso program, Muschietti clarified that the Shadow of the Colossus film is "absolutely not abandoned." He acknowledged the understandable fan concern given the project's extended development, explaining that factors beyond creative desire, specifically the scale and popularity of the IP, are influencing the process. He noted ongoing discussions surrounding the budget and confirmed the existence of multiple scripts, with a personal favorite among them.
Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation Gets Update From Director
While other games, such as Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2 (2024), have drawn inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus's tone and colossal enemies, Sony's original remains a beloved classic. Muschietti, while admitting he isn't a "hardcore gamer," calls the game a "masterpiece" and confirmed multiple playthroughs.
Ueda, the visionary behind the original game's brilliance, has since founded his own studio, GenDesign. Their new, currently untitled sci-fi game, announced at The Game Awards 2024, hints at a similar sense of poignant isolation found in the 2005 original. Despite high-definition remakes culminating in the 2018 PlayStation 4 release, the legacy of Shadow of the Colossus continues its journey towards the big screen, aiming to resonate with existing fans and captivate a new audience.
