NIS America accelerates Western releases of Falcom's acclaimed Trails and Ys series. This article details the publisher's efforts to shorten localization times.
NIS America Streamlines Localization for Trails and Ys Games
Faster Releases for Western RPG Fans
Good news for fans of Japanese RPGs! NIS America's Senior Associate Producer, Alan Costa, recently announced a commitment to faster Western releases of Falcom's popular Trails and Ys franchises. This follows the release of Ys X: Nordics and the upcoming release of Trails Through Daybreak II in early 2025. While still a significant improvement on previous timelines, Costa acknowledges the ongoing internal efforts to expedite the process.
Despite Trails Through Daybreak II's September 2022 Japanese release, its early 2025 Western launch represents a considerable reduction in the typical wait time.
Historically, Western fans faced lengthy delays. Trails in the Sky, initially released in Japan in 2004, didn't reach a global audience until 2011. Similarly, Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure saw a twelve-year gap between Japanese and Western releases. The challenges, as previously explained, stemmed from the immense volume of text requiring translation.
While the localization process remains a two-to-three-year undertaking, NIS America prioritizes quality alongside speed. Costa emphasizes the balance between rapid release and maintaining high localization standards. The past delay of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana due to translation issues highlights the importance of this balance.
The improved timeline for Trails Through Daybreak suggests a positive shift. The game's positive reception further indicates promising developments for future NIS America localizations. For a comprehensive review of The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak, please see our review below.
