Fans of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 are thrilled as the game's developer, Saber Interactive, has opened up its internal editor to modders. This move has sparked excitement about the potential for the game to emulate the longevity of titles like Skyrim through user-generated content. Game director Dmitry Grigorenko announced this major step towards supporting the modding community on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord.
The release of the official Integration Studio to the public marks a significant milestone. This tool, used internally by the developers for gameplay development, now allows modders to manipulate various aspects of the game. From level scenarios and game modes to AI behavior, abilities, melee combos, user interface, and HUD elements, modders can now enhance and expand the game with greater ease and speed.
Grigorenko emphasized the studio's commitment to the modding scene, stating, "Not long ago, I promised we would support the modding scene — and we meant it. Watching this community grow, push boundaries, and create incredible experiences has been both inspiring and humbling. We’re excited to see what you build next — whether it’s a cinematic campaign, wild new game mode, or something we never saw coming."
To kick things off, Grigorenko humorously shared concept art for a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, featuring Marneus Calgar, leader of the Ultramarines chapter of Space Marines. This light-hearted challenge has already spurred modders into action.
I spoke with Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop, the modder behind Space Marine 2’s excellent Astartes Overhaul. Fresh off his latest mod that enables 12-player co-op, Tom now has access to comprehensive scripting tools that govern mission dynamics and game components like weapons and abilities. This opens up possibilities for innovative mods, such as a roguelite mode where players start with a combat knife and face progressively tougher enemies, with chances to acquire weapons, ammo, and health upon defeating them.
While creating a new cinematic campaign, such as a Chaos campaign, is within reach, Tom noted that producing cutscenes remains challenging due to limited access to animation tools. However, he is actively working on adding new factions like the Tau and Necrons, utilizing available character rigs.
The modding community is eagerly working on the "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, embracing Grigorenko's playful challenge.
The reaction from Space Marine 2 fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Although the game is well-received and among the best-selling Warhammer video games, its official content is somewhat limited, featuring only three factions: Space Marines, Chaos, and the Tyrannids. The community had hoped for DLC to expand the faction roster, particularly after the campaign teased the Necrons. Now, with the editor in hand, modders can take the game's future into their own hands.
Redditor Mortwight commented, "This is how you keep a game alive for years like Skyrim," highlighting the potential for Space Marine 2 to thrive long-term through modding.
This development is particularly noteworthy given Saber and publisher Focus Entertainment's announcement of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 in development. While some fans worry about the impact on potential DLC for Space Marine 2, both Saber and Focus have reassured fans that they are not abandoning the game. With modders now empowered by the editor, Space Marine 2 is poised for a vibrant future.
