Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Phenomenal Launch: A Million Copies Sold in a Day
A Resounding Success Across Platforms
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2) has achieved remarkable success upon its February 4, 2025 release, exceeding one million copies sold within 24 hours. This impressive feat significantly outpaces its predecessor, which reached the same milestone in over nine days. Warhorse Studios, the developers, proudly announced this achievement on Twitter (X).
SteamDB data reveals a concurrent player count exceeding 176,285 within the six hours preceding this report, surpassing KCD1's peak of 96,069. Furthermore, KCD2 holds a prominent position, ranking 12th among PlayStation games in the U.S. on the PS Store homepage (at the time of writing). OpenCritic awarded the game a "Mighty" rating, boasting an 89 score and a 97% critic recommendation rate.
Addressing Critical Feedback
Despite overwhelmingly positive reception, KCD2 hasn't been without criticism. Creative Director Daniel Vávra publicly addressed some negative reviews on Twitter (X), highlighting discrepancies between the game's overall rating on OpenCritic and certain lower scores from individual outlets. These lower scores often described the game as tedious or overly demanding. Vávra responded to this criticism, subtly questioning the journalistic integrity of these reviews.
Responding to Online Backlash
Vávra also engaged with online criticism targeting the game's inclusion of same-sex romance options. He called out several Metacritic user reviews labeling KCD2 as "historically inaccurate DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) game." He urged fans to review the game and report any automated negative comments on review platforms. He reiterated that the LGBTQ+ content is entirely optional, emphasizing the player's agency in shaping their gameplay experience within the expansive open-world medieval setting.
