"Metal Gear: Innovating Stealth Game Narratives"

On July 13, the gaming world celebrated the 37th anniversary of Metal Gear, Konami's pioneering action-adventure stealth video game that first hit the MSX2 computer in Japan back in 1987. Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind the Metal Gear franchise, took to social media to share his thoughts on the game and the evolving gaming industry.

Metal Gear Was Ahead of Its Time Using the Radio Transceiver

Kojima highlighted a key innovation from the original Metal Gear that often goes underappreciated: the in-game radio transceiver. This feature allowed protagonist Solid Snake to communicate with other characters, providing players with crucial information such as the identity of bosses, character betrayals, and team member deaths. Kojima emphasized that this tool was not just functional but revolutionary for storytelling in video games.

"Metal Gear was packed with things that were ahead of its time, but the biggest invention was including the concept of a radio transceiver in the storytelling," Kojima tweeted. He explained that the interactive nature of the radio transceiver enabled the narrative to evolve in real-time alongside the player's actions, enhancing immersion and engagement.

"The game moves along with the player, so when the drama happens when the player isn't present (without the player's knowledge), the player's feelings get detached," he noted. "But with the transceiver, the player's current situation can be depicted while the other characters' story or situation can be foreshadowed in parallel." Kojima takes pride in how this "gimmick" has influenced modern shooter games, which often employ similar communication tools.

Hideo Kojima Won't Stop Creating, Ahead of OD's and Death Stranding 2's Releases

At 60, Kojima candidly discussed the impact of aging on his work, acknowledging physical challenges but emphasizing the invaluable gain of knowledge, experience, and wisdom. He believes these attributes enhance one's ability to anticipate societal trends and refine the creative process from planning to release.

Kojima's reputation as a visionary storyteller extends beyond video games, often likened to a cinema auteur. When not collaborating with celebrities like Timothée Chalamet or Hunter Schafer, he is deeply engaged with his production company, Kojima Productions. Currently, he's working with actor Jordan Peele on the project OD, and his studio is preparing for the next installment of Death Stranding, which will also be adapted into a live-action movie by A24.

Looking ahead, Kojima remains optimistic about the future of game development, driven by the constant evolution of technology. "By borrowing the help of technology, 'creation' has become easier and more convenient," he stated. "As long as I do not lose my passion for 'creation,' I believe I can keep going."
