Chess Makes its Esports Debut at the 2025 Esports World Cup
The 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC) is set to make history with the inclusion of chess, a game with millennia of tradition, into its tournament lineup. This surprising addition marks a significant milestone for the ancient game, propelling it into the world of competitive esports.
Chess Officially Joins the Esports World
A groundbreaking partnership between Chess.com, chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) has paved the way for chess's inaugural appearance at the EWC, the world's largest gaming and esports festival. This collaboration aims to introduce the strategic game to a wider, more global audience.
EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert expressed his excitement, referring to chess as "the ultimate strategy game" and highlighting its historical significance, global appeal, and thriving competitive scene as a perfect fit for the EWC's mission.
World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to broaden chess's reach and inspire future generations of players. He expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to showcase chess alongside some of the world's most popular esports titles.
Riyadh to Host the Historic Event
The EWC 2025 will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025, bringing together elite chess players from around the world to compete for a substantial $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be determined through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will vie for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC, marking chess's historic entrance into the esports realm.
To enhance the appeal to esports fans, the 2025 CCT will feature a revised match format. Instead of the traditional 90-minute time control, matches will utilize a faster 10-minute time control with no increment, adding an element of excitement and urgency. Armageddon tiebreakers will be used to determine winners.
Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has evolved and endured across generations, becoming a globally recognized pastime. Its digital transition, facilitated by platforms like Chess.com, broadened its accessibility, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Popular media, including streaming platforms and shows like "The Queen's Gambit," have further amplified its reach. Its official designation as an esport promises to attract even more players and enthusiasts.
