Phantom Blade Zero seeks to carve out a fresh "Wuxia Action" gaming niche. Discover how it diverges from Soulslikes and explore its three distinct difficulty settings designed for varied playstyles.
Why Phantom Blade Zero Breaks from Soulslike Conventions
Director Establishes "Wuxia Action" as a Distinct Genre
Game Director Soulframe has clarified that Phantom Blade Zero isn't a Soulslike, but rather pioneers a unique "Wuxia Action" genre. In a June 24 Developer's Letter on the game's official Twitter/X account, Soulfield responded to community questions about the title's classification.
Initial reactions labeled it a Soulslike due to interconnected world design, hidden secrets, and checkpoint systems. Following demo gameplay, comparisons shifted toward hack-and-slash titles due to its heightened combat tempo relative to standard Soulslikes.

While acknowledging genre labels help players form expectations, Soulframe insists Phantom Blade Zero transcends both Soulslike and conventional action game frameworks. The development drew inspiration from multiple genres, synthesizing them into an innovative hybrid.
The team originally envisioned a hack-and-slash with layered map design. The result became what Soulframe calls "instantly recognizable yet unprecedented in gaming" - a fusion of Chinese martial philosophy, Western combat mechanics, and cinematic storytelling, citing Bruce Lee's interdisciplinary approach.

This distinctive blend sets Phantom Blade Zero apart. Soulframe explains, "Structurally, it qualifies as an ARPG, but thematically it forges a new identity - Wuxia Action." Players can expect lightning-fast combat, rich historical context, and dramatic cinematic sequences.
To showcase this vision, S-GAMES will host exclusive hands-on demos in Beijing (July 26-27), offering players direct experience with the game's innovative core mechanics.
Three-Tiered Difficulty System Detailed

Confirming earlier reports, Phantom Blade Zero will feature multiple difficulty settings, reinforcing its departure from Soulslike conventions. The development letter revealed three presets: Gamechanger (standard), Wayfarer (beginner), and Hellwaker (NG+ exclusive challenge mode).
Gamechanger provides balanced gameplay for mainstream audiences. Wayfarer simplifies mechanics for action game novices. Hellwaker demands mastery, introducing enhanced enemy AI, reworked attack patterns, and exclusive techniques only available post-completion.
S-GAMES aims to announce the release window before 2025 concludes, building anticipation for their "kungfupunk" experience. Phantom Blade Zero launches Fall 2026 on PlayStation 5. For ongoing updates, follow our coverage below.
