Bethesda's Starfield initially planned to feature graphic gore and dismemberment, but technical hurdles forced the team to cut the feature. This revelation comes from former Bethesda employee Dennis Mejillones, a character artist who worked on Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield. Mejillones explained to Kiwi Talkz that the complexity of interacting with the game's various space suits proved insurmountable. The intricate design of the suits, including helmets, hoses, and variable body sizes within the character creator, created a massive technical challenge, leading to the feature's removal.
While some fans expressed disappointment, especially given Fallout 4's inclusion of such mechanics, Mejillones argued that the visceral elements fit better within Fallout's humorous tone. He noted the "tongue-in-cheek" nature of Fallout's presentation, contrasting it with Starfield's different aesthetic.
Despite this omission, Starfield's September 2023 launch propelled it to over 15 million players. IGN's 7/10 review highlighted the game's compelling role-playing elements and combat as key strengths, overcoming various challenges. Post-launch, Bethesda addressed performance issues, enabling 60fps gameplay in performance mode, and released the "Shattered Space" expansion. A separate report from another former Bethesda developer also highlighted unexpected loading screen issues, particularly within the city of Neon, further illustrating the game's development complexities.
