Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features
FromSoftware has confirmed a significant departure from the traditional Soulsborne formula for its upcoming title, Elden Ring Nightreign. Unlike its predecessor, Nightreign will not feature the iconic in-game messaging system.
Game director Junya Ishizaki, in an interview with IGN Japan, explained this decision as a practical one. Nightreign's fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system. This system, a hallmark of FromSoftware games, allows players to leave messages for one another, whether helpful or humorous. While a beloved feature, its inclusion was deemed detrimental to Nightreign's intended streamlined experience.
However, this doesn't mean the abandonment of all asynchronous gameplay elements. Nightreign will retain and even improve upon other features, most notably the bloodstain mechanic. This will allow players to learn from others' deaths and even loot their fallen counterparts, enhancing the shared experience.
FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign is a "compressed RPG," prioritizing intense, consistent multiplayer action with minimal downtime. This ambition, reflected in the game's three-day structure, directly influenced the removal of the messaging system.
The game, revealed at The Game Awards 2024, is currently slated for a 2025 release, though a precise date remains unannounced.
